It's Never Too Early to Start Planning Your Christmas Celebrations

Christmas may seem like a long way away but when you start thinking about how much planning it takes to get everything done on time, you'll realise what a good idea it is to start thinking about it in the summer.

Certain things can be done in advance that will leave you with more time to cook, spend time with your loved ones and relax when the festive season does eventually come around.

Planning Events

To ensure a successful Christmas party, you need to start thinking about venues soon. The best restaurants, bars and clubs get booked up very early on. In the run up to Christmas, people also get very busy with lots of shopping to do and lots of parties to attend so it's best if you let them know of an event as far in advance as possible so they can pencil it into their diaries.

Saving Money

Christmas season is one of the most expensive times of the year what with having to buy gifts and attend parties. Be prepared this year by putting money aside each week from now until winter time when the big spending begins.

Designate a cash box to serve as your Christmas savings bank and set a sum you'll add to it each week. Even ?2 a week is a great investment! That would equal ?8 a month, and with 6 months left to Christmas, that would give you an extra ?48 of spending money.

Put the money box out of the way somewhere so you're not tempted to raid it prematurely.

Buying Gifts in Advance

Many people complain that Christmas shopping is a stressful experience, which is something gift shopping should never be. Presents shouldn't be last minute impulse buys or quick purchases you made because you couldn't be bothered to spend more time in the department store.

Avoid the festive season crowds by buying your gifts in advance. This is also a great way to ensure you won't be strapped for cash in the run up to Christmas. You're always going to be giving gifts to friends and family members who are also the people you know best so it should be quite easy to select presents for them throughout the year.

Lots of us get it wrong by thinking gifts should be seasonal but this isn't the case. The main thing to remember is that presents should be useful to the receiver in some way.

A great combination of seasonal and useful is Christmas hampers that are usually presented as gift baskets full of delicious produce from around the world. This is a gift you can either purchase in advance as a ready-made set or, alternatively, put together yourself adding items each week until you get a nice big selection for the end of the year's festivities.

Let's Start to Enjoy Summer

July tends to be a different experience for people with children than those without children. Child free people can go about their lives, taking time to consider their Summer break. They are often free from time constraints, the limitations of income, school terms or childcare. For those with children July signifies the end of the school year, relief that exams are over or anticipation of student offspring returning from university.

Now that the freedom of the best months of the year are arriving let's start to enjoy Summer:

- Many people are wary of spending a lot of their disposable income on a Summer holiday. Some prefer to wait for a last-minute deal or have a cheaper holiday at home. Many families have ongoing concerns about their financial situation and future security. It's important to resist being pressurised into spending money you cannot afford and then having to commit to stressful months of repayments. Far better to be open and honest about what you can afford from the outset. Real friends will appreciate your position.

- Sharing holidays with others can be claustrophobic. Spending twenty-four hours of the day in each other's company can place severe strain on relationships. Separate accommodation can help introduce some respite from the intensity, as can joining part way through the holiday. If you're accompanying difficult family members try to ensure that everyone has tasks to occupy them; food preparation, childcare, tidying can give everyone a valuable break.

- When entertaining family or friends at home suggest that everyone shares the load by bringing a dish or a bottle. That way a pleasant, relaxed party atmosphere can be enjoyed for relatively little individual expense and effort. Many people are happy to get involved in this way and it makes it easier and less onerous for them to feel comfortable about reciprocating at some point in the future.

- Children can go a little wild after months spent studying. It can be a good idea to initially allow them some latitude to blow off steam and catch up with friends. Then agree some household rules. Outline expected chores, studying, homework routine, especially relevant if they're not getting a Summer job.

- With young children, share childcare with another family if possible. Then you can combine resources to provide a full timetable of trips, overnight stays, catering and fun times whilst giving each other a break and some valuable free time. Many attractions offer special deals on entrance fees and meals for family groups. Check local press for details.

A little forward planning can ensure that July is a fun, eventful month, with plenty of good times enjoyed with family and friends. Planning ahead can ensure that relationships survive intact, children enjoy their Summer holidays, whilst too much money is not spent.
